Statistics show a strong correlation between addiction, depression, and suicide. But how are they related? And how does that effect you or a loved one?

Drug overdose was the leading cause of injury death and last year injury deaths were the fifth most common type of death in the United States. That means that among people 25 to 64 years old, drug overdose caused more deaths than motor vehicle traffic crashes. Not far behind on the list was suicide coming in at eleven. 1 Attempted suicide was not included in those figures, but approximately 5% of the adult population has made a serious suicide attempt.2 The numbers also show a strong connection to substance abuse. In an article that Dr. Howard C Samuels wrote about the subject, he said “about one third of suicides amongst people under the age of 35 are related to a substance abuse problem.” 3
