There are a variety of important issues and topics I’ve covered so far on this blog; however, I think today’s is one of the most important, because it’s so harmful and prevalent in today’s society – substance abuse. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), substance abuse refers to “the harmful or hazardous use of psychoactive substances, including alcohol and illicit drugs.” These substances can lead to what’s known as dependence syndrome, which WHO says is “ a cluster of behavioral, cognitive, and physiological phenomena that develop after repeated substance use and that typically include a strong desire to take the drug, difficulties in controlling its use, persisting in its use despite harmful consequences, a higher priority given to drug use than to other activities and obligations, increased tolerance, and sometimes a physical withdrawal state.” The most common drugs are marijuana, prescription drugs, cocaine, hallucinogens such as LSD, inhalants, MDMA (ecstasy…
