WASHINGTON (CBS DC) — Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., said he “absolutely” wants to address U.S. income inequality, but the wealthiest member of Congress went on to say America’s poor are “the envy of the world.”
The California Republican, whose personal fortune from selling car alarms is estimated to be nearly $450 million, said the U.S. can provide a “good example” for the rest of the world and that it can “do better,” especially in comparison to the world’s most impoverished nations, CNN Money reports. Issa used India as one example where income equality is a cause of both limited upward mobility and wealth disparity.
Issa said that America’s poor are still better off than in “other Third World countries.”
“America’s the richest country on Earth because we’ve been able to put capital together and we’ve been able to make our poor somewhat the envy of the world,” Issa said…
